Therewasadeadsilenceexceptforthenoiseofaveryyoungbadgercryinganditsmothertryingtomakeitkeepquiet.

“Noneofthat!Holdyournoise!”saidtheApewithasnarl。“Whosaidanythingaboutslavery?Youwon’tbeslaves。You’llbepaid-verygoodwagestoo。Thatistosay,yourpaywillbepaidintoAslan’streasuryandhewilluseitallforeverybody’sgood。”Thenheglanced,andalmostwinked,atthechiefCalormene。TheCalormenebowedandreplied,inthepompousCalormeneway:

“MostsapientMouthpieceofAslan,TheTisroc(mayhe-live-forever)iswhollyofonemindwithyourlordshipinthisjudiciousplan。”

“There!Yousee!”saidtheApe。“It’sallarranged。Andallforyourowngood。We’llbeable,withthemoneyyouearn,tomakeNarniaacountryworthlivingin。There’llbeorangesandbananaspouringin-androadsandbigcitiesandschoolsandofficesandwhipsandmuzzlesandsaddlesandcagesandkennelsandprisons-Oh,everything。”
